Stalking Victimization in the Municipality of Anchorage: Key Results from the 2015 Alaska Victimization Survey

This document is a two-page summary of key results on stalking victimization in the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska from the 2015 Alaska Victimization Survey. The summary describes Alaska statutory definitions of the crime of stalking, methodology and limitations of the survey, and estimates of lifetime and past year stalking victimization experienced by adult women in the Municipality of Anchorage. The 2015 Alaska Victimization Survey for the Municipality of Anchorage was conducted from May to August 2015. Stalking estimates were released on January 27, 2017. Findings include: * 1 in 4 women in the Municipality of Anchorage have experienced stalking in their lifetime; * 1 in 18 have experienced stalking in the past year; * More than 30,400 women in the Municipality of Anchorage have experienced stalking in their lifetime; and * More than 6,100 have experienced stalking in the past year. Volunteer Recruitment and Sustainability Assessment: United Youth Courts of Alaska -- Final Report

In response to a request from United Youth Courts of Alaska, we conducted an assessment of volunteer recruitment and sustainability during the Seventh Annual Statewide Youth Court Conference held in November 2003 in Anchorage, AK. We conducted three simultaneous focus groups with a total of 22 youth court volunteers to assess the advantages and disadvantages of volunteering for youth courts and the benefits and costs of continuing to volunteer for youth courts. In particular, we asked youth court volunteers about ways to improve recruitment and sustainability. All youth court volunteers clearly enjoyed their volunteer experience and planned to continue volunteering. In order to recruit and maintain skilled volunteers, focus group participants recommended to: (1) Provide potential volunteers a more accurate description of youth courts, (2) Revise the training course, (3) More proactively curtail the volunteers’ use of drugs and alcohol, (4) Enhance parental involvement in fundraising and non-court activities, (5) Publicize how to get involved in youth courts, and (6) Reward volunteers with tangible incentives. Although none of these recommendations will surprise youth court directors, we hope that this independent evaluation will confirm their beliefs and provide justifications for progress and change. Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence in the State of Alaska: Key Results from the 2010 Alaska Victimization Survey

This document is a two-page summary of the key results from the 2010 Alaska Victimization Survey for Alaska statewide. The Alaska Victimization Survey, designed to establish a baseline for estimates of intimate partner and sexual violence, is modeled after the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The 2010 Alaska Victimization Survey for Alaska statewide was conducted from May to June 2010. Results were released on September 30, 2010 in Anchorage. Older Women Face Psychological and Physical Abuse

A shorter version of this article appeared on pp. 1–4 of the Summer 2017 print edition.This article examines psychological and physical abuse against women in Alaska who are aged 60 or older and compares these rates to national rates. Psychological abuse includes expressive aggression by intimate partners and coercive control by intimate partners. Physical abuse includes physical violence by intimate partners. It also includes sexual violence, by both intimate partners and non-intimate partners. Estimates are provided for both psychological and physical abuse. Alaska estimates come from the 2010–2015 Alaska Victimization Survey (AVS) and national estimates from the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS). Results show that one in nine Alaskan women aged 60 or older (11.5%) experienced psychological or physical abuse in the past year.
